Description: Meet Bramble & Rowan
Bramble and Rowan are a bonded father-and-son pair looking for a loving home together.
Their story is a difficult one, so please read with care.
Bramble is the older of the two. He's an old, worn little man, and honestly, he looks like life has been a little harder on him than it should have been.
We aren't sure of his exact age, but we're estimating he's around 10 years old or older. He has some pretty significant signs of age and barbering. He's chewed his hips down to the skin, leaving them bare. He does have cataracts.
Despite all of that, Bramble is a resilient little guy. I felt Bramble was a fitting name for such a scruffy, tough little chin. He loves to chew wooden items, so be prepared.
Rowan is Bramble's son, and he's almost the complete opposite of his dad.
He's a chunky, plump, strong young male with some of the brightest red eyes we've seen in a while. He's perky as ever, curious, and full of life.
These boys have spent their lives together, and they will be looking for a home together.
These boys were cared for.
Their owner originally obtained them from someone who was urgently rehoming chinchillas online. He took them in with the intention of giving them a safe place while he worked on finding them a better home.
That home never ended up being found.
He quickly learned just how difficult it can be to rehome chinchillas in our area, and in April he reached out to us for help. At the time, we were very full, but we were able to accept one female because she needed a maternity hold. Even though she was separated, that is a non-negotiable for us.
We agreed that we would take the boys once we had space open up through adoptions.
In the meantime, their owner and I stayed in contact. We talked about their needs and little things that could make a big difference in their quality of life. He was very receptive and took every suggestion seriously. He genuinely wanted to do right by them.
Over time, he became someone I considered a friend.
He wasn't in a place where he was ready to foster at that point, but we talked about the possibility of it in the future. We talked about his plans and the things he was looking forward to.
One day, I checked in with him.
Just a simple message asking how the boys were doing with the heat, whether they needed us sooner, and letting him know I was still planning space for them.
He responded normally. He was happy and grateful for some of the quality-of-life tips we had talked about, including shavings.
Everything seemed fine.
Then the next, I got a strange message from another rescuer up north. A woman from another state was trying to find a rescue for two chinchillas. They knew one had already been surrendered, but they didn't know where, and they were trying to find help for the others.
It took a few minutes for everything to connect.
Then I had to stop the conversation and call him.
His sister answered the phone.
He was gone.
He took his own life.
It was his 37th birthday.
He had plans for the day. He had plans to visit family in a few weeks. We had a plan for July.
But before he left, he made sure the boys had food and water. He made sure the AC was on. He made sure everything they needed could be found. He left a note for his family, and we later learned that he had also left our contact information so the boys would make it to us. It just had to be found too.
He made sure they would be okay.
And, we kept our promise.
Bramble and Rowan are safe with Cali FID Rescue.
You never really know what someone is carrying. Everyone said the same thing when we met this afternoon. He seemed hopeful. He was looking forward to the future. Things seemed like they were getting better.
While we are incredibly grateful that he made sure the boys would be safe, we wish he was still here.
He was respectful, kind, and genuinely caring. We will remember him.
And I hope he knows that we kept our promise.
Now it's their turn.
Bramble and Rowan have lost the person who cared for them, but they are safe now.
We want the next chapter of their lives to be peaceful, comfortable, and full of love.
They will be adopted together into a home that understands chinchillas and is prepared to accommodate Bramble's age and medical needs while also giving Rowan the activity and enrichment a young chinchilla needs.
They don't need a perfect past.
They need a safe future.
Their family also asked us to share one final message:
Please speak to your friends, your family, or someone who can help if you're feeling like the world is too much to carry alone.
He was loved.
And you are too.
