About me:
The real Heidi has joined us in the rescue. She is finally here.
Back in April, we had another chinchilla surrendered to the rescue by the name of Heidi from the same family. That Heidi, turned out to be a Henri, who we eventually named Nemo. The family thought they had brought us the female, and at the time we could only commit to ONE because we were so full. When that happens, we take females then come back for males. ( Females are higher risk ).
We reached out to take the other about a week later but didn't hear back, and thought that maybe they changed their mind.
However, we received a call yesterday from the family asking if they were still on our surrender wait-list and if they could bring us the other chinchilla. Technically we're on hold, but I said yes to honor our prior agreement and because I knew the last Chinchilla came to us in rough shape.
The owner was a senior with severe mobility issues and severe breathing issues. They've been honest from the start and their doctor is who initially told her that the chinchillas, with all the dust and fur, we're making her breathing issues worse. She's on a breathing machine now. We didn't hear from the family because she had become so sick, and during that time, someone had crashed into their trailer... Damaging the entire front and shattering her pet turtle enclosures. We were shown pictures, and unfortunately only 2 of her 5 turtles survived. The remaining two were actually surrendered with us today as well.
This is Heidi, and to our surprise, Heidi also has a broken limb just like her brother did upon surrender. These two are siblings, and both had lived with the family for 14 years. They knew Nemo broke his arm as a baby, but they didn't know Heidi had broken her foot. It's healed inappropriately just like Nemo's was.
We don't want to shame the family — 14 years ago was an entirely different world in chinchilla keeping and accessibility to exotic vets.
We're just happy Heidi is here now, and that the family found us.
